Wooden Hair Pick |
Two Special Lignum Vitae Hair Picks |
Lignum vitae, the wood of life, is native to the East Indies and northwestern South America and has a storied past. This wood is one of the hardest known and contains naturally water resistant oils which made it ideal for use in hatch covers and belaying pins on sailing vessels. Lignum vitae's natural lubricant also led to its use as bearing sleeves for propeller shafts in ships as late as the mid-twentieth century. Sometimes called "greenheart," it is medium brown in color with green streaks that come to predominate as the wood ages. |

An Exceptional Tulipwood Hair Pick |
Brazilian Tulipwood (D. decipularis) is cream colored with red or salmon streaks. It should not be confused with the wood of the American Tulip Tree (Liriodendron Tulipifera), which is pale green in color. The wood from which these combs were made was purchased ten years ago and is exceptional in its deep red color and its complex grain pattern. This beautiful member of the Rosewood family is getting scarce on the world market. I doubt that tulipwood of this quality will ever be available again. |

Two Cocobolo Hair Picks |
This hair pick was crafted from Cocobolo (Dalbergia Retusa) widely thought to be the world's most beautiful hardwood. The wood for this comb was cut from plantation grown wood from a tree guaranteed to be sustainably replanted by the Mexican Department of Agriculture. |

Cherry Hair Pick |
I live on three wooded acres on an island in Puget Sound, Washington, USA. Several years ago, an ice storm sent a large wild cherry tree crashing across my driveway. This 9-tooth hair pick was made from some of its wood. |
